Learning Graphic Design - The Errors of Novice Designers
Not making their concepts diverse enough
Creating a few ideas that are very similar by just slightly varying layout or fonts. The problem here lies that all of the design options may be rejected if they are not along the lines of what the client was looking for. If you present very different ideas it is far more likely that one will be chosen. This is one of the first lessons every designer will discover while learning graphic design.
Making design concepts too complicated
There is an overwhelming urge for many new designers to over complicate their designs. Good design is generally very simple. Remember - less is more.

When designing something like an advert or brochure, the graphic designer needs to focus on selling the things that matter to the potential buyer. It is great to make something look beautiful but it also needs to connect and entice the end user.
Targeting the wrong demographic
Not targeting the right target audience with the right type of design. Taken to extremes a young funky style would probably be unsuitable to promoting a retirement home.
Not making the the most of their design presentation skills
A small amount of extra time allocated to design presentation can make the difference between a design being accepted or not. For example if a label design was actually applied to a photo of a bottle it, the client can get a true feel for how the finished design might look.
Starting designing straight on the computer
Starting to design on the computer in my opinion limits your ideas. By turning off the computer for a while and grabbing a pencil and paper ideas can flow more freely. A designer is not limited by technique or filters or "what they know the computer can do" when drawing up rough designs.
Not charging enough for their design work
When a designer starts out it is difficult to judge the worth of their work. What they need to remember is that the clients commissioning the work are generally using their design work to increase their income. A logo can help raise the profile of a company, a piece of packaging can help sell more product. There are many freelance rate calculators available on the web than can help give a guide to the amount a freelance designer should be charging.
Tara Roskell is a freelance graphic designer who runs a graphic design blog all about learning graphic design, illustration, web design, packaging design and freelancing.

The Digital Divide - The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The World Wide Web
The internet represents a world without boundaries, a digital domain both removed from and parallel to our own, where information of any kind can be discovered, downloaded or mail-ordered, and every desire, carnal or platonic, and interest is catered to at the push of a button. From its Cold War origins to the internet boom of the nineties, the World Wide Web has also been feared by those who are ignorant to what the net can offer, or are well aware.
The web did not truly blossom until the mid-nineties, when phone line suppliers and broadband companies began to capitalise on the foreseeable phenomenon. Within but a decade the net has outgrown its initial techno-geek user base and is now an integral part of Western society. Arguably, what was once defined as cyber-culture no longer exists; the net has been embraced by mainstream society and beyond. With internet access steadily expanding into developing countries, and over 1 billion people using the internet worldwide, further growth is inevitable.
Web Design
The obvious benefit of online communication is that of remote access; real time conversation, email, 24 hr banking, and online shopping being several examples. Cyberspace presents a form of global communication that operates regardless of time or place, restricted only to the accessibility of internet access points. Handheld technology, such as WAP mobile phones and wireless connections, has increased this access furthermore, and broadband also offers a form of communication in which the distance or period of communication does not affect the cost.
The Web has presented us with a comprehensible online library, a decentralised information resource that via internet search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, offers instant access to a vast amount of information. Increased bandwidth capacity has made access to digital media, such as Mp3s and video files, convenient and fast, and also brought about a certain preservation of digital information, a good example being ROM emulation, the copied images of retro video games that would no longer be available to the public outside of unauthorized distribution.
In the industrialised world, the Web has brought about the growth of a new form of journalism, and a freedom of speech unattainable through other mediums. The growth of weblogs/blogs, forums, newsletters and personal homepages has presented the user with an affordable way to voice their own concerns, views and interests. Unlike traditional magazines and newspapers, internet sites can survive without finances, and can present appeal to a niche market without marketing concerns. Online, every user can have their say; regardless of whether it is accurate, valid, or worth reading.
Withstanding the boom, and partial crash, of the dotcom enterprises of the late nineties, online shopping has broken numerous trading boundaries, and now provides the buyer with unlimited choices, regardless of location. Amazon provides search engines that are used to track rare books both new and old, and items such as international antiques and collectables can be tracked down with little effort. Mp3 albums and DVD quality video can purchasable and downloaded directly within the hour, eliminating postage costs and shipping times altogether. Though the large corporations arguably dominate the online market as they do the 'real world', smaller businesses and aspiring professionals have prospered from the low-cost advertising and small scale financing that the Web, and market-sites such as eBay, offer, and can effectively promote themselves alongside their conglomerate competitors by focussing on a specific market.
With this growth of online trading, companies are forever attempting new marketing methods. With many browsers now featuring automatic pop-up filters, the business world will test new ways to monitor potential clients. With companies finding new ways to monitor and exploiting search engines, user privacy is an increasing concern.
Despite this promise of communicational possibilities, the rift between the acceleration of access points in industrialised countries compared to that of developing countries is widening faster, with internet growth in the third world impeded by both financial and structural limitations, referred to as 'digital divide', an economic phenomenon that distinguishes developed from developing countries, where factors of geography, socio-economic status and ethnicity prove crucial.
Encouragingly, many developing countries are seeing the number of internet access points double each year, but another divide that looks less likely to close is the language barrier. With English the most requested language on the Web, and the majority of multilingual sites catering predominantly for the western languages, many minority languages have suffered online, impeded by the dominance of the Latin alphabet and QWERTY keyboard. Nevertheless, 35.6% of the world's internet users are based in Asia, with Chinese and Japanese being the second and third most frequent languages, respectively.
Unarguably the digital sceptic's greatest ammunition is the abundance of both easily accessible pornography and online crime. Porn is the Web's largest and most financially profitable industry, having flourished from the Web's lack of censorship and private nature, and the availability of sexually explicit sites to young children is a growing concern to many parents. Parental filters and adult verification filters are easily bypassed by computer literate youngsters. Though not technically illegal, many adult sites tread ambiguously, selling products and services from a country/state in which they are legal, to a consumer located where they are not.
Credit card fraud, privacy invasion and personal security are a constant concern to many internet users, with online criminals forever developing new ways to steal credit card details and bank information, despite the effectiveness of antivirus programs and firewalls. Scams such as 'phishing', in which the internet subscriber receives a seemingly legitimate email demanding their personal banking details, are increasing common.
Another widespread concern has been online piracy. With the music and film industries claiming to have lost billions from internet piracy, file sharing is a practice that has become increasingly commonplace despite the legal issues. The tension between protecting intellectual property and promoting creativity and the free flow of ideas is evident.
Whereas in the Western world there has been much debate over the benefits of a complete lack of censorship, in other regions such as the Middle East, the internet is considered a security threat by less democratic governments, and political and religious sites have been censored from the public by government controlled filters. With the People's Republic of China arresting individuals for accessing non-sanctioned websites, the antithesis of the Western attitude, one that is itself criticized for doing little to police the Web, where paedophilia and Nazism sites are rising. The net potentially allows those who would previously have be been observers to become participants.
All taken into account, it is easier to be sceptical than favourable. The greatest advantage that the Web has brought to the Western world, one that no number of concerns can detract from, is the level and range of free speech, globally decentralised and for the most part, unmonitored. This double-edged blade encompasses both the darkest depravity of the Web, and the broadening of democratic boundaries; for every opportunity online communication offers, exploitation is to be expected. Cyberspace offers a separate world that parallels our very own, for bettor or worse, and is all the more interesting because of it.

Blogger Vs WordPress
Quality
The quality of both WordPress and Blogger are exceptional. Each blogging platform has good up-time stats and each blogging platform is designed to display properly in all web browsers. Again, Blogger and WordPress are both good platforms to choose whether you are starting out, or you are an experienced blogger. There are a few more options if you use WordPress, but I'll explain later.
Web Design
The quality of both blogging platforms are equal, however, if you need help or need to contact customer service, both Blogger and WordPress fail. I have needed to contact both blogging platforms before, and both services are extremely un-helpful. WordPress has a resource where you can contact customer service through email, but I have never received replies. Google however, does not have any contact information, but they have user discussion forms. And often times my questions have been answered by other members of those forms. Never directly by Google Blogger.
User friendly
Many people disagree on this subject, but the truth is that Blogger is more user friendly then WordPress. WordPress has many plug-ins which are available to download to your blog, but each one takes a certain amount of knowledge to set up. Also, changing the template can be a challenge (unless you use a WordPress template) because many custom templates make changing color and arrangement difficult. So, unless you know in-depth HTML and CSS it may be a challenge.
Many people dislike Blogger for different reasons, but Blogger has some great tools for beginner bloggers and expert bloggers alike. You don't need to know much about HTML and CSS, but knowing basic coding will help you out when you need to customize the template. Changing the colors is easy thanks to the user friendly color and font converter tool in Blogger.
There are not many plug-ins available for Blogger, however many developers are coming up with easy to integrate widgets which can be added to the template. However, HTML and CSS knowledge is required for adding these widgets.
Interface
The user interface of WordPress is in-depth and great for an expert blogger. However, with some learning and playing around with different tools within the WordPress user interface, you can begin to learn how to make your blog even better. Knowing what each section of your account interface is used for will help you understand how to navigate and change different aspects of your blog with ease.
Blogger's interface is extremely easy to navigate. With easy to use color/font changer tools, and with an easy flash template rearrange tool, it makes it extremely easy for any beginner to set up a blog with Blogger. Whether you use a basic Blogger template or a complete custom template, it will be easy to change the layout and colors without knowing anything about HTML or CSS.
Options
As mentioned in the previous paragraphs, options for WordPress are easier to find and easier to install with basic coding knowledge. Finding plug-ins for WordPress is super easy; there is a WordPress marketplace for plug-ins as well as many free downloadable plug-ins from other sites. For many free plug-ins just Google 'WordPress Plug-ins'.
Not as many options are available for Blogger, but there are a few basic options available for you to add to your Blogger blog. Many of these custom features for your Blogger account will be very valuable especially if you are using a custom template. In order to add these custom features such as a 'read more' button or any flash widgets, you must know HTML and CSS. If not, it will make it extremely difficult to figure out how to install these custom Blogger options.
For beginner or expert
Both Blogger and WordPress are as difficult as you want to make them. You can create a basic blog with WordPress or Blogger, and make some basic customizations. However, if you start to become more creative and if you want to have a more in-depth blog, using WordPress will make it more difficult for you. But Blogger will make it easier to customize basic elements. Over all, WordPress is for Experts, and Blogger is for anyone including beginners and experts.
Magnetization
Both Blogger and WordPress offer the same basic methods for making money from your blog. Basic methods for magnetization include text affiliate links and banner ads. But, Blogger allows you to embed AdSense on your blog, and WordPress does not. So, if you are creating a blog to make money, use Blogger.
Over all
Blogger vs WordPress is a debate that will brew for many years. Many people swear by WordPress, and many people swear by Blogger. The one downside to using WordPress is any customization you want to make will cost you. You cannot upload a custom template for free; you cannot make any custom changes for free. However, Blogger is all free, no matter what custom change you make; it is completely 100% free.
Blogger Vs WordPress
With the world of social media growing so fast, blogs are a great way to tell the world about yourself and your business. Or, if you are up for a great opportunity, have you ever thought about becoming a professional blogger, like me? Consider creating a business and learn how to make money from blogging [http://www.extremewealthguide.com/search/label/Make%20Money%20Blog]. Web Design Company Foresees New Trends in Web Design for Small Businesses
It is a normal human trait for people to stick to what they are used to, and shopping habits are no different. To draw the same analogy, online shoppers tend to buy from the same sources they are used to. A greater percentage of sales made by web business owners are usually to repeat buyers. Any online business that can utilise this to their advantage will save a lot of money on marketing costs, and make more sales.
The goal of every small business with an online presence is to get a lot of traffic and convert most of that traffic into returning, paying visitors. As more businesses establish an online presence, competition increases for the dollars spent by online shoppers. As such, web design trends have changed in the last few years to reflect the goal of web businesses to own sites that attract visitors, retain these visitors and keep the shoppers spending. This is the main reason designers are creating websites that have the ability to retain visitors or at the very least, retain their personal information through the use of opt-in forms, free subscriptions, etc. Such information can be used for purposes of follow-up advertising via the use of auto-responders.
Web Design
The trends listed below are all geared towards that singular goal of getting and retaining traffic, and converting that traffic into sales.
So what are the web design trends we expect to see in 2010 and possibly beyond?
We are going to see a shift towards small business branding their online presence in order to have a lasting impression on site visitors. This will be achieved by using oversized headers, hand drawn designs on the web pages, bold and imposing slab typefaces (which are usually all upper case letters), all in an attempt to leave impacting images that site visitors can identify with and relate to a particular web business.
We will see homepages that look more like personalized, online business cards, with emphasis on the individual small business owners and their blogs. Customers are drawn to personalised businesses; they like to see the face of a business and not some faceless individuals hiding behind a corporate cloak. Corporate images took a hit during the global economic crisis in 2008, as many big name companies collapsed, heavily affecting consumer sentiment. After all, "people buy from people (they trust and like)!"
We will see more homepages using huge and colourful images that will not only draw customers into the site, but create a visual impact that leaves a lasting impression with the customer.
We will see sites being designed to be more customer-interactive. Customers will like to see that they can make inputs into what they want out of products they are interested in, and if a web business tailors their products and services towards customer's needs, this will likely lead to increased patronage.
We will see the use of oversized footers and intro boxes that will tell the customer in a flash what a small business is all about. This takes away the complexity of designing an "About Us" page.
We will also see greater use of magazine-layout styles for the homepages. This enables site visitors get just about all the information they need to get about a business without having to keep scouring through the site just to get a hang of what the business has to offer.
Another new trend is to find a cost-effective way to get more traffic. We have many traffic-boosting tools available to webmasters now. We will see more back-linking, blogging, use of social networking sites and article reviews, all in an attempt to corner traffic from the web.
Web Design Mandurah incorporate the latest ideas and industry thinking in the websites they design and develop. Their websites come with an integrated customer database whereby visitor contact details that are input to enquiry forms on the website are automatically centrally recorded for use in email marketing campaigns including sending e-newsletters, anniversary emails, reminder emails etc. For more information, contact Web Design Mandurah at http://www.mandurahwebdesigners.com.au for a free consultation and redesign of your current website with the latest trends.

The Basic Skills Needed to Become a Web Designer - Simple Programs You Can Teach Yourself
There is no handbook on the skills needed to become a web designer. Nor is there a fixed aptitude or personality test required to qualify as one. All you need to have is the knowledge of a few basic programming languages, a good design sense and the drive to experiment. Signing up for a web design course might be partially useful, but in the end most of what you implement will be self-taught. And since the Internet gives you access to a large number of design portals as well as the latest programs, it does prove to be an added boon. By surfing the Web, checking out design blogs and downloading software you can develop a signature style that is in sync with your personality and creativity.
The first three programming languages that you need to learn are:
Web Design
HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language is a programming language that is used to present pages and text on the Web. You can start writing these either on NotePad or Windows. It is one of the first languages you will need to start out with on your journey to become a web designer. Various mark up tags are used for each stage of text from the title , to the start and end of a new paragraph , and even for an image . These are the tags that give the text you see on a website, its format and font. Now this program is essentially a beginner's tool and also meant for designers who are focusing more on text. If you want to learn more about graphic design then Adobe Photoshop and Flash should be on the top of your list.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets are what you use to convert the HTML code you have written into a web page as you see it on the Internet. CSS can either be downloaded as ready templates or you can create your own template using Macromedia Dreamweaver or BB edit. Once you have created your style sheet, you can implement it either externally, by imbedding it, or by using inline CSS. The method you select depends on how large your website is and how you decide to maintain it.
JavaScript
This is a scripting language which is connected to HTML. It allows the web designer to make his web page dynamic and interactive. By using this coding, you can determine what happens when a user clicks on a link; whether he is shown more text or whether he is taken to a new website.
By learning these three languages, you can acquire the basics needed to become a web designer. Once you have mastered these, you can move on to other programs that help make your website more user-friendly, appealing and more likely to be picked up by search engines.
After mastering the skills needed to become a web designer you should also determine whether you want to work with a design studio or independently. Both are equally good options though the latter gives you more scope to experiment. It's not too hard getting yourself a domain name and finding a reliable hosting company which will enable you to get more freelance work. These along with a stable internet connection, a computer with a good resolution and the ability to withstand hours in front of the computer screen should stand you in good stead. It is only through constant practice and by working on a variety of projects that you will be able to hone your design sensibilities, which is what will make your work distinct and much sought after.
